In 2004, Jane Catherine Shaw and Sarah Provost entered into an extraordinary enterprise for any producer--let alone two struggling artists. They approached Theater For The New City in New York City and engaged in a dialog about presenting a Festival of Puppetry that would support local artists. The Jim Henson Foundation lent their support as did the Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation. By 2010 the Festival had grown to include not only main stage productions, but also a Gallery, a Puppet Art Attacks Slam and an evening of Puppets On Film. The Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival celebrates the work of a unique group of New York artists who have been creating dynamic puppet theatre for many years. The Festival is committed to supporting and encouraging the recognition of New York artists--both emerging artists and established artists--who are creating work of merit. In fostering the development of their work and their audiences, the Festival also celebrates and promotes puppetry to New York audiences, who may never have attended a full length theatrical piece conceived for puppetry. Theatre For The New City provides a venue for these artists through its Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival. Co-Curators Sarah Provost and Jane Catherine Shaw hope to encourage and nurture the growth of these artists by providing this much needed venue for the presentation of full length works.
